Q 1. How can I nominate an employee for an OPAL DD course at TATI?
First of all you are strongly advised to familiarise yourself with the current edition of the OPAL Road Safety Standard and a separate OPAL document called Annexure A2 • Defensive Driving Training and Assessment Standard.

Q 2. What do I need before I can do an OPAL DD course?
OPAL rules require an HSE passport or HSE Induction Course or HSE Orientation.
Q
3. How can my company cancel the nomination of an employee on a training course?
To avoid cost, a company can cancel a nomination up to 48 HOURS before the start of a training course by sending a written notification to TATI.
Q 4. What happens if an employee does not attend the training course?
OPAL rules state that DD training providers may choose to charge fees for no-shows as per their own policy. It also states that candidates who fail to attend a minimum of 95% of the total hours allocated for the DD training shall be withdrawn from the course.
Q 5. Why is the SJM (Safe Journey Management) nomination form different to the DD one?
You may only attend an SJM course when you can satisfy the relevant qualifications and experience prerequisites.
These courses are clearly mentioned on the SJM nomination form, which is why a different one is required.
Q 6. Where does TATI deliver the various OPAL DD courses?
• All LV and HV courses: Al Khoud.
• TN and LB/HB courses: Al Khoud.
• GR/TN/LB/HB courses: Fahud and Nimr (Interior).
• RT courses: Al Khoudh, Fahud and Nimr.

7. How long are the courses?
• LV/HV/LB/HB: two-day training programmes.
• GR/TN: One-day training programmes.
• RT courses: 4 hours.
Q 8. What languages are the courses available in?
Arabic, English and Hindi.
Q 9. Are these approved courses?
Yes, these courses are approved by OPAL.
Q 10. What is the dress code for attending a DD course?
• LV courses: Comfortable dress, can be dish-dasher, SHOES NOT SANDALS.
• HV/TN/LB/HB courses: Overalls and safety-shoes MUST BE WORN for HV AND TN • optional for LB/HB.
• RT courses: As for vehicle type.
Q 11.Is there an assessment at the end of a DD course?
Yes.The assessment is administered by one of the OPAL-approved defensive driving assessment companies (DDACs).
TATI is an approved DDAC but does not assess its own candidates.
Q 12. What happens if I fail my assessment?
The candidate can attend a re-assessment within TWO WEEKS. If he does not do so, he will have to attend the full initial course again.

13. What happens if I fail my second assessment?
You will have to do the initial DD course again.

15. Who provides heavy vehicles for practical training on DD Courses?
The nominating company can either provide one of their own HVs or hire one of TATI•s 10t trucks. Please enquire for details

Q 17. What is the procedure for booking if my company doesn•t have a credit facility with TATI?
The relevant nomination form must be fully completed and bear your company•s official stamp. Once done, it must be submitted to TATI with the cash payment for the required booking.

Q 18. Who will pay for the training course?
Your company has to pay for OPAL-approved training courses. It is also permissible for individuals to pay for themselves if their circumstances require it.

Yes. This can happen if
there are safety-related
issues and is at TATI management’s
discretion
Q 21. What does the term ‘No
Show’ mean?
A client is marked as ‘No
Show’ for the following
reasons:
• Failed to arrive (absent)
on 1st/2nd day.
• Arrived late for the
course.
• Failed the Keystone
eyesight test
• Did not bring a valid
ROP driving licence appropriate
to the course –
including length of time
held, where this is relevant.
• Did not bring HSE Passport
or prerequisites not therein.
• Not in possession of
proper footwear
• Did not bring vehicle
(where applicable).
• Unable to understand
course language.
• Dangerous driver despite
best efforts by trainer.
• Other course prerequisite(s)
not met.

eyesight test done?
You can have a Pre-course
eyesight test done at
TATI once you have received
our written course confirmation
(there is no charge for
this service).

Permit valid for?
This can vary depending on your performance when tested by the DDAC. In broad terms, the better the candidate•s performance the longer the validity period of the permit.
TATI is not involved in assessing its own candidates.

26. What is the process to renew the OPAL driving permit?
You need to enquire about an RT (Refresher Training) recertification course.

27. If I am an automatic driving licence holder, which DD course should I do?
LV Blacktop in an automatic vehicle.

28. What if the DD permit is not renewed?
The affected person must attend the full initial course again.

29. Can the Driving Permit be renewed with another training institute?
Candidates are entitled to select any OPAL-approved DDTP.
